The Art of Sahrawi Hospitality (Kahn & The Cooperative of Western Saharan Women/UNMS), 2013 Texas

A public art commission by Make Art with Purpose Inc.

This project was inspired by Kahn’s experiences in the Tindouf Refugee Camps in Algeria where the people of Western Sahara have lived since 1975.  There she produced Dining in Refugee Camps: The Art of Sahrawi Cooking, a publication that focuses on how Sahrawi women have adapted the meal to create a sense of “home” within a state of “homelessness”. For Dallas, Kahn designed her project around a symbolic Sahrawi home, the traditional family tent where anyone who passes by is invited in to enjoy a cup of tea and a conversation with its hostesses, eight Sahrawi women from the camps.
